So I enrolled in the personal genome project a while back. I haven’t really mentioned it much here. I went to Boston for GET2012 – a conference with the other participants and to learn about the future of the study, and genomics in general.

“The project will publish the genotype (the full DNA sequence of all 46 chromosomes) of the volunteers, along with extensive information about their phenotype: medical records, various measurements, MRI images, etc. All data will be placed within the public domain and made available over the Internet so that researchers can test various hypotheses about the relationships among genotype, environment and phenotype.”

The security professionals I hang around generally roll their eyes at this. Heh. Yes, I know, it’s an insane amount of privacy to relinquish. I will gladly give it up to see this type of progress.

On a related tangent, I am infinitely intrigued with using our own bodies for experimentation. Yes, that probably sounds creepy… we’re trained that our bodies are off limits -that a select group of people are the final word….

People are already fucking around with their bodies in ill-informed ways. Foregoing actual treatment for crap like homeopathy. What if medicine, genetics, etc was more accessible? What if a Carl Sagan type came along and laid it all out for the average Joe? Let us tinker! I’ll happily take the risk of becoming a Darwin award. ;-)

I love to see people implanting magnets and experimenting with their bodies. We’re on the tip of something amazing and I hope I live long enough to see it.

Google glasses? Fuck yes! Now implant it directly into my melon and drop the patent. kthx

You found me how?

My non-wife, Jane In her Infinite wisdom, has this tradition on her blog. I believe it’s been passed down from another blogger… anyway, I’m stealing it.

The tradition is, once a month, she posts the most interesting or bizarre search terms that landed people on her blog. Since I’ve never done this before, I thought I’d select a few from my all time search history. To be fair, there’s a lot of penis references from my dick cake. You’ve been warned.

For my own amusement, I will attempt to answer these search queries in the form of a drawing.

7. my erected morning penis

6. male gimp artwork

You got me. I did draw that one already.

5. penis in a bun

You got it.

4) what to for horny cat

To the drive in of course.

3. zombie penis

2. pantie on dick

And my favorite:
1) nifty old grandmas

Hey! Hey you! Are you reading this yet? http://blog.cognitivedissidents.com/2012/03/08/building-a-better-anonymous-series-part-4

It’s worth your time, and I’m not just saying that because my art is scattered around in this series. Er OK, maybe I’m a wee bit biased. ;-) Did I mention I’m selling art prints from the series?

…I did? Oh OK.  Just checkin’.

IR remote controlled RGB LED mood lighting

I <3 LEDs. Really, I love them. If I could afford it, my house would be solely lit by controllable RGB LEDs. I am not terribly savvy when it comes to electronics projects, but this one was cake.

Here’s where I found it: http://blog.thingm.com/2011/07/invisible-accent-light-with-blinkm-maxm-freem/

It’s Blinkm Maxm + FreeM + RGB LED Strip + Universal IR remote control. That’s it! I didn’t program anything. I didn’t even have to solder.
Lucky me, someone even designed an enclosure that I printed out on the makerbot: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:14908
Mine is slightly modified to fit the FreeM hanging off the bottom there.

And the results? Awesome.

Here’s a little video showing off changing the color/brightness.

I liked the tiny canvas so much I decided to keep going. Not sure when I’ll get tired of it, but for now, I’ll update my pics in my portfolio with a new critter each day. Enjoy!

If you’d like to buy a critter, let me know! They’re $60 a piece. I have a couple left but they’re selling quick.

So, I was going to do a long post about my new makerbot. For those of you who don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, it’s an adorable 3d printer that fits on your desk. It pulls a plastic filament through a heated head and spits out melted plastic on a moving platform, laying down row after row until you’ve got a 3d object. Youtube has tons of videos of what printing looks like if you’re curious.

Instead of blogging the long, boring assembly and troubleshooting, I’ll show you my first project with it. :-)

I found a flying spaghetti monster cookie cutter on thingiverse. The print turned out ok, but it had some gaps that food might get stuck in, so I opted to do something other than bake delicious gingerbread monsters.

Christmas – I’m lovin’ it.

My Christmas tree this year.
I haven’t celebrated Christmas for a few years now. Even though my parents aren’t religious, this upsets them a bit. I guess they feel like I’m missing out. I end up getting coaxed into just a little bit of Christmas every year. So my dad calls me up today, insistent on getting me a tree. I caved and said, “Well, ok, as long as it’s a small one.”

With every intention of decorating the tree tastefully, I headed to Target… and then, the McDonalds playkit caught my eye.
